EuropaBio awarded Phytowelt as most innovative EU Biotech SME in the field of Agricultural BioTech

Phytowelt GreenTechnologies was honoured by EuropaBio with this year’s “Most Innovative European Biotech SME Award” in the category Agra-Biotech.

EuropaBio’s unique annual initiative recognises the achievements of small but dynamic, organisations, and the crucial role they play in answering some of society’s greatest challenges. At the 9th edition of the award ceremony in Brussels, on the evening of 3 December, Member of the European Parliament Dr. Paul Rübig handed over the award to Phytowelt’s CEO Dr. Peter Welters. The jury, consisting of scientists, industry experts and EU parliamentarians, honoured Phytowelt with the first price for its holistic approach, in which energy crops are optimized through innovative plant breeding in order to produce valuable fine chemicals on their basis. Such a flagship product is the highly pure raspberry aroma R-(alpha)-ionone, which Phytowelt produces in a bio-fermenter under low energy consumption. In this way, a valuable and natural ingredient for the cosmetics and food industries is produced without creating conflicts with food security.

On the 10th “International Conference on Bio-based Materials”, the Innovation Award of “biobased material of the year 2017” took place. Phytowelt is one of the winners 2017 with the chiral raspberry fragrance.

The “International Conference on Bio-based Materials” is a well-established meeting point for companies working in the field of bio-based chemicals and materials. Almost 200 participants, mainly from the industry and representing 25 countries, met in Cologne to discuss the latest developments in the sector.
Third place: Phytowelt GreenTechnologies (DE): High-quality raspberry fragrance with the help of biotechnology
The (R)-alpha-Ionone is the main component of raspberry fragrance. Usually it is synthesized chemically as a racemate which contains the enantiomer (R)-alpha-Ionone as well as the distomer (S)-alpha-Ionone. The (S)-form has a woody and musty flavour which gives the chemical racemate a different and impure fragrance. However, it is complex and uneconomic to separate the two molecules. With its patented process, Phytowelt is now able to produce only the desired (R)-alpha-Ionone. Therefore, the raspberry fragrance is chiral pure, smells intensive and is, because of the biotechnological production, a natural flavour component. It can be used in food, drinks, perfumes, drugs and other applications. This raspberry fragrance is the first natural essence in the market which can be produced in high quantity as well as quality resulting in a high competitive advantage.

On 10th and 11th May the International Bio-based Conference will take place in Cologne for the 10th time.
One of the agenda items is the ceremony of the Innovation Award on the first conference day. Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH is one of the nominees for the Innovation Award 2017.
6 companies will try to win the award: Most of the products are sustainable materials for different fields. Phytowelt presents an other type of product – the (R)-alpha-Ionone, a raspberry fragrance.
But what makes that raspberry fragrance innovative? It is…
– chiral: only the desired (R)-form will be produced. Other raspberry fragrances mostly have the (S)-form too,
which effects a woody musty smell
– high concentrated
– sustainable: 1 g of the fragrance saves up to 111 tons of rasberries and about 20 hectars goround
The process is patented by Phytowelt and enables them to produce the raspberry fragrance which is unique worldwide.
