Production of double haploid triticale

Phytowelt is an expert in the development and establishment of sophisticated methods to accelerate plant breeding

Routineproduktion von doppelhaploiden Triticale-Pflanzen: Von der heterozygoten Mutterpflanze bis zum reinerbigen Saatgut

For the production of completely homozygous lines, the production of double haploid plants is a key technology in plant breeding. Such lines allow plant breeders to efficiently cross valuable traits in elite varieties and thus shorten the long way to variety registration. At Phytowelt, we specialize in developing key technologies tender made for demanding plant species from our customers and establishing them as routine services. The cereal triticale is just such a plant. It is considered one of the most demanding cereals when it comes to treatment in tissue culture. Based on 20 years of experience, Phytowelt’s scientists were able to efficiently produce double haploid triticale plants for an international customer within a very short time.

“Being able to use such protocols opens new doors for breeders and enables cost-effective breeding even for lesser known ornamental – medicinal – and crop plants.
We love to take on new scientific challenges and thus contribute to a modern but diverse agriculture. The production of double haploid triticale is a good example of this”.

Phytowelt GreenTechnologies was honoured by EuropaBio with this year’s “Most Innovative European Biotech SME Award” in the category Agra-Biotech.

“Phytowelt GreenTechnologies’ creative innovation is enabling the company to produce and commercialise a high quality product, which is increasingly in demand, whilst using less resources, land and energy.” stated Joanna Dupont-Inglis, Secretary General of EuropaBio. EuropaBio’s unique annual initiative recognises the achievements of small but dynamic, organisations, and the crucial role they play in answering some of society’s greatest challenges. At the 9th edition of the award ceremony in Brussels, on the evening of 3 December, Member of the European Parliament Dr. Paul Rübig handed over the award to Phytowelt’s CEO Dr. Peter Welters. The jury, consisting of scientists, industry experts and EU parliamentarians, honoured Phytowelt with the first price for its holistic approach, in which energy crops are optimized through innovative plant breeding in order to produce valuable fine chemicals on their basis. Such a flagship product is the highly pure raspberry aroma R-(alpha)-ionone, which Phytowelt produces in a bio-fermenter under low energy consumption. In this way, a valuable and natural ingredient for the cosmetics and food industries is produced without creating conflicts with food security.

”I was surprised and really proud when we were announced as the winner at the award presentation. I am especially pleased that our company, which has been in business for 20 years, was proclaimed as the most innovative SME in the agricultural biotechnology category despite 40 other much younger competitors. It demonstrates that we are able to stay at the forefront of development in the bioeconomy sector” said Dr. Peter Welters, CEO of Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH, founded in 1998. Plantdustrials Symposium – 18.09.2017 – 4 pm – Cologne

phytowelt symposium

„Modern plant breeding – romantic agriculture or innovative business?“

Our annual Plantdustrials Symposium together with IHK Cologne will take place soon!

Save the date: 18.09.2017 between 16:00 – 19:00 at IHK Cologne.
The 11. Biotech-Symposium „Plantdustrials“ takes place. This year’s focus of Plantdustrials is  „Green Biotechnology: modern plant breeding – romantic agriculture or innovative business?“.
IHK Cologne organises it in cooperation with CLIB 2021, BioRiver as well as assistance of Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH.

It’s a great pleasure to welcome Prof. Dr. Holger Puchta from KIT as keynote: He will show us the beginning of a revolution in plant breeding and what can be expected for future development in plant breeding.
In addition we assure you further interesting talks of successful industry representatives: they will give us an insight into general methods of plant breeding as well as business models in this field.
To entertain you duly, we hold a few interactions for you. Especially for the networking part there will open up specific opportunities for you.

But see for yourself! You find the current program here and on the IHK Cologne website, where you can register for free as well.

We are looking forwards to entertain and inform you on our symposium

Innovation Award Winner – 3rd place!

Phytowelt innovations award 2017

On the 10th “International Conference on Bio-based Materials”, the Innovation Award of “biobased material of the year 2017” took place. Phytowelt is one of the winners 2017 with the chiral raspberry fragrance.

The press release of Nova-Institute contains the following part:

The “International Conference on Bio-based Materials” is a well-established meeting point for companies working in the field of bio-based chemicals and materials. Almost 200 participants, mainly from the industry and representing 25 countries, met in Cologne to discuss the latest developments in the sector.

Third place: Phytowelt GreenTechnologies (DE): High-quality raspberry fragrance with the help of biotechnology

The (R)-alpha-Ionone is the main component of raspberry fragrance. Usually it is synthesized chemically as a racemate which contains the enantiomer (R)-alpha-Ionone as well as the distomer (S)-alpha-Ionone. The (S)-form has a woody and musty flavour which gives the chemical racemate a different and impure fragrance. However, it is complex and uneconomic to separate the two molecules. With its patented process, Phytowelt is now able to produce only the desired (R)-alpha-Ionone. Therefore, the raspberry fragrance is chiral pure, smells intensive and is, because of the biotechnological production, a natural flavour component. It can be used in food, drinks, perfumes, drugs and other applications. This raspberry fragrance is the first natural essence in the market which can be produced in high quantity as well as quality resulting in a high competitive advantage.

Phytowelt reaches the finals: Innovation Award Biobased Materials 2017

Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH reaches the finals of the Innovation Award “Bio-based materials 2017”!

On 10th and 11th May the International Bio-based Conference will take place in Cologne for the 10th time.
One of the agenda items is the ceremony of the Innovation Award on the first conference day. Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH is one of the nominees for the Innovation Award 2017.
6 companies will try to win the award: Most of the products are sustainable materials for different fields. Phytowelt presents an other type of product – the (R)-alpha-Ionone, a raspberry fragrance.
But what makes that raspberry fragrance innovative? It is…
         –    chiral: only the desired (R)-form will be produced. Other raspberry fragrances mostly have the (S)-form too,
which effects a woody musty smell
         –    natural
         –    high concentrated
         –    sustainable: 1 g of the fragrance saves up to 111 tons of rasberries and about 20 hectars goround
         –    cost-savings
The process is patented by Phytowelt and enables them to produce the raspberry fragrance which is unique worldwide.
We are looking forward to the International Conference on Bio-based materials and all the inspiring innovative ideas there.
