Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH is a researching and producing company in the field of green and white biotechnology and was formed in 2006 from a merger of the companies: Phytowelt GmbH and GreenTech GmbH, both of which were founded in 1998.
After Dr. Peter Welters founded Phytowelt and also took over the management of GreenTech GmbH, a spin-off of the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, the step towards a merger was the logical consequence.
The then core competence of plant breeding as well as plant biotechnology is still a decisive part of the company’s orientation today.
In this division, breeders, farmers, pharmaceutical and food companies are supported to generate crops with higher yields, to establish resistances (see somatic hybridisation or phytoediting) or to achieve homologous inheritance of the genome (see double haploid breeding).
As markets and demands change, the department of industrial biotechnology has been added over time and has become increasingly important – both in our portfolio and on the world market. With the help of industrial biotechnology, we create innovative solutions for our customers and generate products that are produced by microorganisms.
Such products can be components of flavours, APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients), cosmetics and food supplements.
Since 2018, Phytowelt has been producing and distributing such a product, the natural raspberry flavour ingredient (R)-alpha-ionone, together with our partner flavour house Axxence.
With a history dating back to 1998, a lot of know-how and experience come together to support the success of our developments and their production.
